Our focus is on providing a safe and practical approach to Bullying Self Defense for all children including those with special needs. Our Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu DTD program in La Mirada was developed for child safety. With this program, we aim to equip children with the ability to overcome dangerous and aggressive behaviors outside of the home.

WHAT IS DTD?

DTD stands for Distance, Talk, Defend and is a program developed by Gridlock Academy specifically for child safety. It addresses the dangers that children may face outside of the home. We have created a series of effective Verbal Jiu Jitsu and Physical Bully Proof Techniques that work for kids facing dangerous and aggressive behavior in school or elsewhere. These techniques are based on proven methods.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Distance
Establishing a safe distance between your child and the bully is crucial.

Talk
Verbal Jiu Jitsu is an effective technique that uses 1, 2, or 3 key phrases to deter 9 out of 10 bullies. In a high-pressure situation, it is important to avoid prolonged discussion as it may escalate the conflict. Our verbal commands must be followed immediately to establish a safe distance and de-escalate the stand-off.

Defend
The DTD program at GridLock Academy is based on the proven Gracie Jiu Jitsu Self Defense Techniques of Grand Master Helio Gracie. Effective implementation of DTD requires an understanding of the core principles of action, reaction, leverage, base, and patience. The program teaches the steps to manage distance, close the distance, dominate the position, and secure a submission, when necessary. In addition to bullying defense, the program also covers techniques for escaping sexual predator kidnapping. All techniques taught have been tested and proven to work against even the most relentless and vicious bullies.

1) What's the difference between Jiu Jitsu and every other martial art?

Jiu-jitsu is designed to empower the weak against the strong and there are no particular physical requirements to begin learning it. Essentially, anyone can learn jiu-jitsu, especially when taught through the Gracie method!

2) What if my child don't have any previous experience?

Not a problem! Our beginner programs are specifically designed from a structure and a safety perspective for first-time Jiu Jitsu students.

3) Does my child need to be in good shape?

No, stay exactly how he/she is. You don't get in shape to learn Jiu Jitsu, you do Jiu Jitsu to get in shape!

4) What should my child wear?

Just show up in comfortable workout attire and we'll provide everything he/she needs. No special training equipment or protective gear is required.

5) My child did some Karate years ago, will he/she do any Kata's?

No. - Kata is often described as a set sequence of karate moves organized into a pre-arranged fight against imaginary opponents.

6) Can I bring a water bottle, and where does he/she store it?

Yes, you can bring a water bottle and store it near the edge of the mat.

7) Who will my child practice with?

As a first-time student, we will pair he/she up with a slightly more experienced student who can answer their questions and help guide their learning throughout the class.

8) Will my child get injured or embarrassed?

It's understandable that injuries or embarrassment may discourage them from returning. This is why our beginner programs are tailored to create a safe and supportive environment for new students, with the goal of making the classes as encouraging and safe as possible.

9) Will my child get punched or kicked?

In our Jr. Core Gracie Jiu Jitsu program No one will be punching or kicking your child.. We will keep our programs as real as we can without sacrificing the techniques or injuring our students.

10) How will his/her first class go?
